Most common bamboo utensils are the likes of bamboo baskets, sieves, bamboo steamers.  Keep in mind that they are weaved from bamboo strips.  Where the strips crossed is the most susceptible to mold, if moisture were left undried.  That’s why it is key to dry bamboo utensils well and store them in places where air flows.  But don’t get over-concerned, well dried utensils won’t get mold easily, except maybe in regions where rainy seasons exist.  In that case, once there was mold, just wash and dry them well, and the mold can be easily removed.

How to wash bamboo utensils well?  Use PH balanced soap, and a brush as common as a toothbrush would do.  Brush with soap, for the strip-crossed spots, use your brush to attend to the tiny corners, and then rinse thoroughly.  Dry it with a cloth, and place it vertically to let air flow and dry out completely.  Remember not to store it when it is not completely dry.  Dryness is good for your bamboo utensils. Additionally, do not immerse your used bamboo utensils too long in the water, preferably wash immediately after usage, to maintain its optimal condition.

For usage, one thing to be aware of is, oil is easy to penetrate bamboo and leave out a darker patina.  If you don’t like that look on bamboo, keep out the oil.  For instance, use silicon paper, or bamboo leaves to bed your oily food on bamboo containers, platters.

Just these few simple considerations during usage will keep your bamboo utensils in good condition.
